5th Doctoral Conference in Kaunas: “The Last Dance”
From 21 to 25 October, the sixth PhD seminar led by Prof. Dr. Holger Preuss took place, this time in Kaunas, Lithuania, hosted by the Lithuanian Sports University (LSU). The motto “The Last Dance – Our Moment, Our Legacy” refers to the final season Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls spent together in 1997/98. For many in the group it was the last seminar together, as most of the participants will complete their PhDs within the next six months.
The week began on Thursday with the 8th LSU Sport Forum. International speakers addressed talent identification and development in football, the future of sport and the role of innovation and AI, and the European basketball model. The speakers included EuroLeague CEO Chus Bueno. Panel discussions and start-up pitches offered exciting insights into Lithuanian and European sport practice.
The day after, the PhD seminar started. Once again, the seminar covered a wide range of topics. On Friday, PhD students from Mainz and Kaunas presented their projects in a concise 8-minute format. Dr. Hakan Yilmaz provided methodological input with an introduction to mediation and moderation analyses and an SPSS training. Prof. Dr. Vilija Fominiene introduced LSU and its research. Fresh PhDs Dr. Kim Schu and Dr. Yannick Rinker shared their experience with the synopsis and the oral exam. Prof. Dr. Holger Preuss gave tips on time management and on communicating complex ideas clearly.
In addition to the seminar content, the trip—as always—offered a variety of opportunities to interact on a personal level and get to know one another better. These included walking tours of the city, several visits to cafés and restaurants, and attending the EuroLeague basketball game at the sold-out Žalgirio Arena, where the local club, Žalgiris Kaunas, defeated LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne.
We danced our last dance in the literal sense on Saturday night in Vilnius. On Sunday, after a short city tour, we headed back to Frankfurt.
We would like to warmly thank Prof. Dr. Irena Valantine, Prof. Dr. Vilija Fominiene and the PhD students of LSU for their hospitality and the great exchange!
In the end, just like with the Bulls, a bittersweet feeling remains. We are proud of what we have achieved together, yet we know that this constellation of people, ideas and experiences will never exist in quite the same way again. But the end of a journey is not the end of its legacy. Each of us carries a piece of this team into the world. Special thanks go to Prof. Dr. Holger Preuss, who built this team, guided it through six seminars and has always supported each of us on our individual paths!
