Masterstudierende in Doha

Innerhalb des Moduls „Sportmanagement in anderen Kulturen“ waren 11 Studierende des Masterstudiengangs „Internationales Sportmanagement“ für zwei Wochen (19.03. bis 31.03.2022) in Doha (Katar) an der Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) und haben dort weitreichende Kenntnisse über das Eventmanagement im Sport in einer anderen Kultur erlangt.

Teil des Programms waren zahlreiche Führungen durch Sportstätten, wie beispielsweise durch das für die 2022 in Katar stattfindende Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft erbaute Education City Stadium, durch die Aspire Zone Foundation (Doha Sports City) inklusive der Aspire Academy – einem hochmodernen Nachwuchsleistungszentrum für eine handvoll Sportarten -, dem Losail International Circuit (seit 2021 offizielle Formel 1-Strecke), dem Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club und dem Education City Golf Club. Die Besichtigungen wurden durch Informationen über die Planung und Durchführung von Sportevents, dem Venue Management und der dort jeweils angebotenen Services geprägt. Zudem hörten die Studierenden spannende Vorträge darüber, wie die WM Katar seit der Vergabe des Turniers verändert hat und inwiefern die Stadien nach der Weltmeisterschaft weiter genutzt werden sollen. Nennenswerte Bestandteile der Exkursion waren außerdem Besuche der Qatar Foundation, des Qatar Science & Technology Parks, des Organisationskommitees für die WM und ein Talk mit dem Executive Director für Wettkampf und Fußball der Qatar Stars League (1. katarische Fußballliga).

Der weitere Inhalt war geprägt durch die Revision und theoretische Erweiterung von (bei vergangenen Großsportevents durchgeführten) Studien (Sustainability-Umfragen) und die Entwicklung eines Fragebogens über die Nachhaltigkeits-Strategie der WM in Katar, welche die 5 Säulen Human, Social, Economic, Environmental & Governance umfasst. Mit Bezug zu dieser Thematik wurden den Studierenden außerdem aufschlussreiche Vorträge von dem Sustainability Manager Denis Ekren und der Sustainability & Environmental Expertin Dr. Talar Sahsuvaroglu gewährleistet. Zudem führten die Studierenden, unter der Leitung von Dr. Kamilla Swart-Arries, eine Feldforschung (In-field research) bei Fußball-Freundschaftsspielen (Katar vs. Bulgarien / Kroatien vs. Slowenien / Kroatien vs. Bulgarien / Katar vs. Slowenien) im Education City Stadium durch, unterstützten die Junior League Finals der U15/U17 der Qatar Community Football League (QCFL) bei der Siegerehrung und schauten bei dem Viertelfinale des QCFL Cup QF im Al-Rayyan Sports Club zu.

Als Highlight zu erwähnen war zudem die Teilnahme an der dreitägigen Qatar International Sports Engineering Conference & Exhibition im Qatar National Convention Centre und der offene Austausch innerhalb der Global Politics of Sport Class mit Studierenden der Georgetown University Qatar über Themen wie die kritische Berichterstattung über Katar, Missstände im Land, Frauen im Sport, Besonderheiten im jeweiligen Sportsystem und der jeweiligen Kultur.

Neben den zahlreichen universitären Aktivitäten blieb den Studierenden auch Zeit die Stadt zu erkunden: Der traditionelle Markt Souq Waqif, eine Wüsten-Tour, die Besichtigung der Education City Moschee, Spaziergänge an der Corniche, eine Bootsfahrt in dem Stadtteil „The Pearl“ und vieles mehr waren Unternehmungen, die die unvergessliche Zeit in Doha geprägt haben.

Die Studierenden bedanken sich herzlich für die umfangreichen Möglichkeiten und neu erlangten Erfahrungen, die ihnen durch den Auslandsaufenthalt in Doha gegeben wurden!

Within the module "Sport Management in Other Cultures", 11 students of the Master's programme "International Sport Management" were in Doha (Qatar) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) for a fortnight (19.03. to 31.03.2022) and gained extensive knowledge about event management in sport in another culture.
The programme included several tours of sports venues, such as the Education City Stadium built for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the Aspire Zone Foundation (Doha Sports City) including the Aspire Academy - a state-of-the-art youth development centre for a number of sports - the Losail International Circuit (official Formula 1 circuit since 2021), the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club and the Education City Golf Club. The visits were characterised by information on the planning and implementation of sporting events, venue management and the services offered there in each case. The students also heard exciting presentations on how the World Cup has changed Qatar since the tournament was awarded and how the stadiums will continue to be used after the World Cup. Notable components of the excursion also included visits to the Qatar Foundation, the Qatar Science & Technology Park, the World Cup Organising Committee and a talk with the Executive Director for Competition and Football of the Qatar Stars League (1st Qatar Football League).
The other part of the programme was the revision and theoretical extension of studies (sustainability surveys) conducted at past major sporting events and the development of a questionnaire on the sustainability strategy of the World Cup in Qatar, which comprises the 5 pillars Human, Social, Economic, Environmental & Governance. Related to this topic, the students were also guaranteed insightful presentations by Sustainability Manager Denis Ekren and Sustainability & Environmental Expert Dr. Talar Sahsuvaroglu. In addition, the students, under the guidance of Dr. Kamilla Swart-Arries, conducted in-field research at friendly football matches (Qatar vs. Bulgaria / Croatia vs. Slovenia / Croatia vs. Bulgaria / Qatar vs. Slovenia) at the Education City Stadium, supported the Qatar Community Football League (QCFL) U15/U17 Junior League Finals at the award ceremony and watched the QCFL Cup QF quarter-finals at Al-Rayyan Sports Club.
Another highlight was the participation in the three-day Qatar International Sports Engineering Conference & Exhibition at the Qatar National Convention Centre and the open exchange within the Global Politics of Sport Class with students from Georgetown University Qatar on topics such as critical reporting on Qatar, grievances in the country, women in sport, specifics of the respective sports system and culture.
In addition to the numerous university activities, the students also had time to explore the city: The traditional market Souq Waqif, a desert tour, the visit of the Education City Mosque, walks along the Corniche, a boat trip in the district "The Pearl" and much more were activities that shaped the unforgettable time in Doha.
The students would like to express their sincere gratitude for the extensive opportunities and newly acquired experiences that were given to them during their stay abroad in Doha!
