Im Rahmen einer Exkursion sind vier Masterstudierende des „Internationalen Sportmanagement“ Studiengangs zu den Special Olympics nach Berlin gereist, um dort am olympischen Geist teilzuhaben.
Das Ziel der Reise war zunächst ein solches Großsportereignis am eigenen Leib zu erfahren und welche Organisation dahintersteckt. An den Special Olympics nahmen vom 17. – 25. Juni 2023 7000 Athlet*innen, mit geistiger oder mehrfacher Behinderung, aus 190 Ländern teil. Um einen reibungslosen Ablauf der Spiele zu gewährleisten, halfen mehr als 12.000 Volunteers.
Die zentralen Programmpunkte der Exkursion bestanden aus dem Besuch des Fackellaufs „Flame of Hope”, der Eröffnungsfeier im Olympiastadion am 17.06.2023 und einigen Wettkämpfen verschiedener Sportarten am 18.06.2023.
Nach unserer Anreise am Freitag, starteten wir am Samstag mit dem Besuch des Fackellaufs. Dort trafen wir mit Leonie Teigesser eine Alumni unseres Studiengangs, welche uns als Koordinatorin für Medien, Event und Marketing spannende Einblicke in die Organisation des Fackellaufs geben konnte. Daraufhin besuchten wir das Special Olympics Festival am Neptunbrunnen, wo einige Projekte zum Thema Inklusion vorgestellt wurden und verschiedenen Verbände vertreten waren. Dort erhielten wir weitere interessante Einblicke, unter anderem auch bezüglich der Qualifikationsverfahren, welche die AthletInnen durchlaufen mussten, um an den Spielen teilzunehmen.
Am Abend ging es dann zur Eröffnungsfeier, ein hochemotionales Event unter dem Motto #ZusammenUnschlagbar. Die Athlet*innen aus 190 Ländern wurden tosend empfangen und es folgte eine Show aus verschiedenen Auftritten von Musiker*innen, Sportler*innen und Botschafter*innen, um die Werte der Special Olympics zu vermitteln, bei denen es weniger um Leistung, als die Selbstverständlichkeit geht, an solch einem großen Sportereignis als geistig behinderter Mensch teilzuhaben.
Am Sonntag, welcher für die meisten Sportarten der erste Wettkampftag war, schauten wir uns eine breite Auswahl an Sportarten an. Darunter Hockey, Leichtathletik, Fußball, Rhythmische Sportgymnastik und 3x3 Basketball. Interessant war hier zudem, dass in einigen Sportarten der Unified Sports-Ansatz angewendet wurde, wobei Personen mit und ohne geistige Behinderung gemeinsam in einer Sportart antreten. Besonders beeindruckt hat uns zudem die durchweg sehr positive Stimmung sowie ein sehr faires Miteinander, sowohl von Seiten der Zuschauer*innen, als auch unter den Athlet*innen.

As part of an excursion, four master's students from the "International Sports Management" program traveled to the Special Olympics in Berlin to participate in the Olympic spirit.
The goal of the trip was first of all to experience such a major sporting event first hand and to learn about the organization behind it. From June 17-25, 2023, 7000 athletes with intellectual or multiple disabilities from 190 countries took part in the Special Olympics. More than 12,000 volunteers helped to ensure that the Games ran smoothly.
The central program points of the excursion consisted of the visit of the torch relay "Flame of Hope", the opening ceremony in the Olympic stadium on June 17, 2023 and some competitions of different sports on June 18, 2023.
After our arrival on Friday, we started on Saturday by visiting the torch relay. There we met Leonie Teigesser, an alumni of our study program, who was able to give us exciting insights into the organization of the Torch Relay as coordinator for media, event and marketing. Afterwards, we visited the Special Olympics Festival at the Neptunbrunnen, where several projects on the topic of inclusion were presented and various associations were represented. There we received further interesting insights, among other things also concerning the qualification procedures, which the athletes had to go through in order to participate in the games.
In the evening, the opening ceremony took place, a highly emotional event under the motto #UnbeatableTogether. The athletes from 190 countries received a thunderous welcome and a show of various performances by musicians, athletes and ambassadors followed to convey the values of the Special Olympics, which are less about performance and more about the naturalness of participating in such a major sporting event as an intellectually disabled person.
On Sunday, which was the first day of competition for most sports, we watched a wide range of sports. Among them were field hockey, athletics, soccer, rhythmic gymnastics and 3x3 basketball. It was also interesting to see that in some sports the Unified Sports approach was used, whereby people with and without intellectual disabilities compete together in one sport. We were particularly impressed by the very positive atmosphere throughout and the very fair cooperation, both on the part of the spectators and among the athletes.
