Vom 14. bis 19. Juli fand unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Holger Preuß die fünfte Doktorandentagung in Bochum statt – eingebettet in die FISU World University Games und den begleitenden wissenschaftlichen Kongress. Unter dem Motto „Event Evaluation“ bot die Tagung elf Doktorand*innen eine Plattform, aktuelle Promotionsprojekte vorzustellen, methodische Kompetenzen zu vertiefen und den fachlichen sowie persönlichen Austausch unter den Teilnehmenden zu fördern.
Im Mittelpunkt stand erneut das bewährte Format „Challenge and Defence“, bei dem die Teilnehmenden ihre Arbeiten vorstellten und im Peer-Feedback-Verfahren kritisch, aber konstruktiv diskutiert wurden. Dieses Format ermöglichte einen intensiven Austausch über Forschungsfragen, Studiendesigns, Herausforderungen im Forschungsprozess sowie Publikationsstrategien. Gerade im Vergleich zur letzten Doktorandentagung in Köln war es spannend zu beobachten, wie deutlich die Doktoranden bereits in ihrer Promotion vorangekommen sind.
Ergänzt wurde das Programm durch methodische Impulse renommierter Expert*innen, insbesondere zur Evaluation von Events. Beiträge kamen u. a. von Prof. Dr. Holger Preuß (JGU Mainz), Prof. Dr. Christoph Bühren, Andreas Parensen, Prof. Dr. Christian Gaum (Ruhr-Universität Bochum) und Prof. Dr. James Santomier (Sacred Heart University, USA).
Ein besonderes Highlight war die praxisnahe Feldforschung am 16. Juli im Rahmen der Eröffnungsfeier der FISU World University Games in Duisburg. Im Stadionumfeld führten die Doktorand*innen erste Befragungen durch – eine wertvolle Gelegenheit, das Gelernte direkt anzuwenden und die einmalige Eröffnungsfeier hautnah zu erleben.
Neben dem fachlichen Austausch bot die Tagung auch ein vielfältiges Rahmenprogramm. Die Abende klangen bei geselligem Beisammensein aus – inklusive eines kompetitiven Beachvolleyball-Matches mit den Kolleg*innen aus Bochum, das für viel gute Laune sorgte.
FISU World Conference
Abgerundet wurde die Woche durch die Teilnahme an der dreitägigen FISU World Conference (17.–19. Juli). Der Kongress stand unter dem Motto „Competing for Change: exploring sustainability and (mental) health through sports“ und bot Raum für interdisziplinären Austausch und internationale Vernetzung. Vier der teilnehmenden Doktorand*innen stellten dort ihre eigenen Forschungsprojekte vor. Zwischendurch blieb auch Zeit, um Sportarten wie 3x3-Basketball oder 3x3 Rollstuhlbasketball live zu erleben.
Fazit
Die fünfte Doktorandentagung war ein voller Erfolg. Die Gruppe bedankt sich herzlich bei Prof. Dr. Holger Preuß für die Organisation und sein Engagement sowie bei den Kolleg*innen aus Bochum für die großartige Gastfreundschaft!

5th Doctoral Conference in Bochum & Visit to the FISU World Conference
From July 14 to 19, 2025, the fifth Doctoral Workshop took place in Bochum under the direction of Prof. Dr. Holger Preuß. Embedded in the FISU World University Games and its accompanying scientific congress. The workshop focused on the topic “Event Evaluation”. It offered a platform for eleven PhD candidates to present their research projects, deepen their methodological skills, and foster academic and personal exchange within the group.
5th Doctoral Conference
At the heart of the workshop was once again the well-established “Challenge and Defence” format. In this setting, participants presented their ongoing research and received structured peer feedback - both critical and constructive. This format enabled intensive discussions on research questions, study designs, challenges in the research process, and publication strategies. Compared to the previous workshop in Cologne, it was particularly rewarding to observe the progress many participants had made in their doctoral work.
The academic program was enriched by methodological insights from renowned experts, especially on the topic of event evaluation. Key contributions were made by Prof. Dr. Preuß (JGU Mainz), Prof. Dr. Christoph Bühren, Andreas Parensen, Prof. Dr. Christian Gaum (Ruhr University Bochum), and Prof. Dr. James Santomier (Sacred Heart University, USA).
A special highlight was the field research on July 16, conducted during the opening ceremony of the FISU World University Games in Duisburg. In the stadium environment, PhD candidates conducted their first interviews—an invaluable opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting and experience the unique atmosphere of the opening ceremony up close.
Beyond the academic sessions, the workshop also featured a diverse social program. Evenings were spent in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, including a fun and competitive beach volleyball match with the PhD students from Bochum - an activity that brought plenty of laughter and team spirit.
FISU World Conference
The week concluded with participation in the FISU World Conference (July 17–19). Held under the theme “Competing for change: exploring sustainability and (mental) health through sports”, the conference provided space for interdisciplinary dialogue and international networking. Four of the participating PhD students presented their own research projects at the conference. In between sessions, there was also time to enjoy live events such as 3x3 basketball and 3x3 wheelchair basketball.
Conclusion
The fifth Doctoral Workshop was a great success. The group extends heartfelt thanks to Prof. Dr. Holger Preuß for his commitment and organization, and to the colleagues in Bochum for their warm hospitality!
