Gleich doppelten Grund zur Freude gibt es in der Abteilung Sportökonomie, -soziologie und -geschichte: In diesem Sommer haben Dr. Kim Schu und Dr. Yannick Rinker ihre Dissertationen erfolgreich verteidigt und damit ihre Promotionsverfahren abgeschlossen.
Dr. Kim Schu promovierte zum Thema „Strategic Management in Times of Change: Insights from European Sport Governing Bodies“. In seiner Arbeit setzte er sich mit dem strategischen Management europäischer Sportverbände in Zeiten tiefgreifender Veränderungen auseinander. Die Disputation erfolgte im Mai 2026.
Dr. Yannick Rinker verteidigte seine Dissertation mit dem Titel „Between Perception and Public Support – A Multidimensional Perspective on Sustainability as a Legitimacy Factor“. Seine Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit Nachhaltigkeit im Kontext von Mega-Sportevents und deren Bedeutung für die öffentliche Wahrnehmung, Unterstützung und Legitimität.
Beide Promotionsprojekte wurden von Prof. Dr. Holger Preuß betreut. Die weiteren Gutachter der Dissertation von Dr. Schu waren PD Dr. (habil.) Mathias Schubert und Prof. Dr. Christoph Bühren. Die Dissertation von Dr. Rinker wurde von Prof. Dr. Chris Horbel und Prof. Dr. Michael Doppelmayr begutachtet.
Ein gemeinsamer Satz hat Kim und Yannick während ihrer Promotionszeit immer wieder begleitet: „Der Weg ist das Ziel.“ Rückblickend fühlt sich der erfolgreiche Abschluss deshalb für beide weniger wie das Ende eines Weges an. Vielmehr ist er das Ergebnis einer prägenden Zeit voller wissenschaftlicher und persönlicher Entwicklung und zugleich der Ausgangspunkt für alles, was nun folgt.
Die Abteilung gratuliert den beiden herzlich zu ihren erfolgreich abgeschlossenen Promotionen und wünscht beiden für ihren weiteren privaten und beruflichen Weg viel Erfolg!

There is double cause for celebration in the Department of Sport Economics, Sport Sociology and Sport History: This summer, Dr. Kim Schu and Dr. Yannick Rinker successfully defended their dissertations, thereby completing their PhD degrees.
Dr. Kim Schu completed his PhD on the topic “Strategic Management in Times of Change: Insights from European Sport Governing Bodies.” In his dissertation, he examined the strategic management of European sport governing bodies during periods of profound change. He successfully defended his dissertation in May 2026.
Dr. Yannick Rinker defended his dissertation entitled “Between Perception and Public Support – A Multidimensional Perspective on Sustainability as a Legitimacy Factor.” His research focuses on sustainability in the context of sport mega-events and its significance for public perception, support, and legitimacy.
Both doctoral projects were supervised by Prof. Dr. Holger Preuß. The additional reviewers of Dr. Schu’s dissertation were PD Dr. (habil.) Mathias Schubert and Prof. Dr. Christoph Bühren. Dr. Rinker’s dissertation was reviewed by Prof. Dr. Chris Horbel and Prof. Dr. Michael Doppelmayr.
One phrase accompanied Kim and Yannick throughout their doctoral journeys: “The journey is the destination.” Looking back, successfully completing their doctorates therefore feels less like reaching the end of a journey. Rather, it represents the culmination of a formative period marked by academic and personal growth, while at the same time serving as the starting point for everything that lies ahead.
